The streets, roads, tracks were difficult. As we have been travelling during the rainy season, some of the tracks had been washed away or closed. Some of them were so muddy that we could only cross them by luck. Often we had to turn back, because a bridge was missing or the road all of a sudden was a dead end. And the slightly chaotic way of street building in Zambia didn’t help us at all. You can find for example a wonderful new tarred road in middle of nowhere. The new street sections often start at a river – without a bridge of course – and they end at another river, no bridge again. Very helpful if the river is like 3-4 meters deep. Obviously the specials like bridges are placed with different contractors – once all the street sections are built! And the different contracts are not coordinated. And on top the puzzle will most likely not been finished as the government doesn’t seem to have enough money left to pay the contractors. So you have to use the old very used streets. If you think you have seen streets with potholes: go to Zambia you will experience a completely new dimension.
