As of end of March 15
Cash
Withdrawing cash from the ATM’s is only possible up to 2,000 MAD (approx. CHF 200). This drives the commissions quite high.
A lot of people recommend therefore the German “DKB” as they promote not taking a commission for cash withdrawal outside Germany. In Morocco the DKB cash card didn’t work at any of the ATM’s. We were lucky already if the card was accepted here and there in the big shopping centres. So we definitely do not recommend this card for Morocco.
Food
Like in many other countries it is safer to buy potable water in bottles. In Morocco we recommend the 5l bottles as the locals on the countryside really like them and re-use them for many purposes.
Water for the household you can get normally at those gasoline stations which have a washing bay.
Everyday food you get in any Souk. More or less every village hosts 1-2 times a week an open market. You can also buy meat. Most of them have fridges nowadays.
Cheese, crème and alcohol lovers have to get their favourites in the big shopping malls of Marjane, Carrefour or Acima. You find them at the periphery of the bigger cities.
Travel books
In any official travel guide you will find a remark that the legal exit formality has to be done on the ferry. You need to get your departure stamp in your passport there. We did ignore that and had massive problems to enter Morocco.
With regards to off-road tracks most of the travel guides are not up-to-date. Based on our waypoints we suppose that they didn’t drive the tracks but rather took waypoints based on google maps.
For all of you who love to drive off-road we recommend the books from “Jacques Gandini: Pistes du Maroc”. Unfortunately they are quite expensive and only available in french. But they feature and share a lot of details and experiences. And it offers waypoints for download.
